Lecce is best known for its Baroque architecture, university population, and lively café culture rather than cannabis. Like elsewhere in Italy, recreational cannabis remains illegal, and the city’s cannabis culture is generally low-key and private rather than open or commercial.
What the culture is like
Lecce has a sizeable student population thanks to University of Salento, and its social life centers on the historic center, outdoor cafés, bars, and piazzas. As in many university cities, cannabis use exists within some social circles, but it is generally discreet rather than visible.
Unlike cities such as Milan or Rome, Lecce does not have a reputation for an extensive or highly visible cannabis scene. Public consumption is uncommon, particularly in the busy historic center where police and municipal authorities maintain a noticeable presence.

Cannabis is not a defining part of the city’s identity or tourism. Visitors should not assume that the relaxed atmosphere of southern Italy means cannabis laws are loosely enforced—Italian drug laws still apply, and enforcement can occur in public spaces.
